Law Enforcement Academy

Gateway Technical College’s 520-hour law enforcement academy offers students the opportunity to become certifiable as a law enforcement officer within the state of Wisconsin.

Eligible students must have earned at least 60 credits from an accredited post-secondary institution. Academy recruits can be:

  • those seeking the training needed to obtain an entry law enforcement position as a police officer, deputy sheriff or tribal officer
  • those also be those already hired by a law enforcement agency needing training

Students will receive top-flight instruction which will prepare them well for the rigors and skills needed to be a law enforcement officer in Wisconsin. A simulated cityscape and scenario-based situational and firearms training further trains and tests student performance during stressful and/or investigative situations.

The intense, 15-week law enforcement academy is scheduled 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Fall Academy dates are scheduled for September 6, 2012-December 18, 2012. 

The academy includes several training modules and unified tactics:

  • Firearms
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations
  • Defensive and Arrest Tactics
  • Tactical Field Exercises
  • Professional Communications

Completion of the Law Enforcement Officer 520 Hour Basic Training Course meets State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board requirements for certification. Employed candidates become certified upon presentation of their academy transcripts to the Standards Board and upon board approval. Candidates seeking employment have three years from completion of the course to secure a law enforcement position in order to become certified.

Cost for the program is $2,950.00.

Kenosha Campus

Entrance requirements, self-sponsored:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Earned at least 60 fully accredited college credits
  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license or other valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Complete an oral interview with a panel
  • Undergo a criminal history records check
  • Undergo a physical assessment
  • Complete a DJ-LE-327 form

Entrance requirements, agency sponsored:

  • Agency must complete and send in a DJ-LE-303 form prior to officer beginning training. This form is available only through the Department of Justice, Carolyn Olson, (608) 264-6377.

$32,000 – $45,000

Students are required to provide

  • Black tactical pants
  • Black tactical boots or black cross training shoes
  • The academy provides two shirts. Students are required to provide any after that.

Apply to the academy, application packet

  1. Fill out the Application for Admission for the college. (A $30 fee will be required for new students. This expense is outside of the $2,950.00.)
  2. Obtain a copy of your driver’s license.
  3. Verification of birth certificate. An official birth certificate must be presented in person and verified by the Academy office. DO NOT SEND IN COPIES.
  4. Obtain a copy of your high school transcripts.
  5. Obtain a copy of your official college transcripts.
  6. Complete the DJ-LE-327 form, Application for Enrollment Basic Law Enforcement Academy, Jail or Secure Juvenile Detention Officer. You must complete the questions in Section 6.
  7. Complete MV2896 – Vehicle/Driver Record Information Request and mail with the $7 fee to:

  8. Complete Criminal Investigation Background:

Applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m., July 13, 2012. All application materials must be turned in to the Law Enforcement Academy Office prior to the oral interview. Completed applications will be reviewed and those chosen will be invited to interview with a panel of criminal justice executives.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or accepted.

After acceptance
Undergo a physical assessment, at your own expense, and have your physician complete DJ-LE-332 Physician’s Assessment. Only complete this if you have been accepted into the program.

Basic Law Enforcement Training, Part-Time

Dates: 9/11/2012-6/7/2013

Cost: $2,950.00

Location: Kenosha Campus

Description: The 520 Hour Basic Recruit Law Enforcement Academy at Gateway Technical College provides competency-based instruction designed to meet the criteria for certification as set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Justice--Training and Standards Bureau. The part-time program runs every other evening, and alternating Saturdays during the day.

Prerequisites: Pre-service applicatnts must have obtained a minimum of 60 college creduts at an Associate's Degree level or higher to apply. Medical exam, background checks, and an oral interview are included in the applicaiton process.
